Paula and Felix: A Family of Artisans Rooted in the Andes
Life by the Lake
Paula and Felix live and work in southern Peru near Lake Titicaca, one of South America's largest lakes nestled high in the Andes Mountains. Their home workshop is truly special, the top level offers a sweeping view of the lake, while the middle floors are home to their extended family. Their daughter Cecilia and granddaughter Zoe live in the apartment just below the workspace, creating a multi-generational household filled with warmth, connection and creativity.
A Chance Encounter
Our journey with Paula and Felix began unexpectedly in 2017. While walking through Puno, a city known as a regional trading hub, René and I wandered into a small shop and struck up a conversation with the warm-natured woman behind the counter. Her name was Paula. After sharing a bit about our brand and our purpose in Peru, she revealed that her family made Alpaca textiles and that everything in the shop was made by her husband, Felix. That same day, Paula welcomed us into their home and introduced us to their family workshop.
A Heritage of Craft
Paula and Felix come from generations of artisans, and their entire extended family works in textiles. Their daughter Paula runs her own shop in another part of the city, and their son Reynaldo is also in the Alpaca trade. Their niece Veronica often travels from another town to help during busy periods. It was immediately clear that this was more than a business, it was a way of life.
We started working with them right away, and their early samples quickly grew into a full production partnership. Since then, our relationship has only deepened.
Connection Beyond Craft
Of all our artisan partners, we have spent the most time with the Mamani family. We have stayed in their home, shared meals, played games, took day trips, and formed a bond that goes far beyond work.
One of our favourite memories was visiting nearby hot springs. During the trip, Paula shared her deep knowledge of the local land and traditional natural remedies — a reflection of the cultural wisdom passed down through her lineage. She is a kind, maternal woman with a generous heart. Felix, calm and good-humoured, takes every Sunday to play soccer and unwind with friends. Together, they make a remarkable team.
Their Work and Legacy
While Felix leads the making process, Paula is the family’s business manager. Their workshop is safe and comfortable, a space where heritage and livelihood meet. Specialising in Alpaca textiles, they use the finest materials and time-honoured techniques passed down from their ancestors to create pieces that are both beautiful and functional.
At La Sierra, we feel incredibly fortunate to work with Paula and Felix. Their commitment to quality, tradition and collaboration reflects everything we stand for. By supporting their work, we help preserve a cultural legacy that has been nurtured through generations — ensuring it continues to be celebrated, shared and passed on.
