A Family of Master Weavers
Hugo and his family are highly skilled weavers with decades of experience behind them. Based in Arequipa, southern Peru, their family business, Illary, specialises in working with the finest natural fibres, including premium Baby Alpaca. Hugo’s son, Sebastian, has been gradually stepping into the leadership role, learning every aspect of the business and preparing to carry the family legacy forward.
A Trusted Partnership
Illary is one of La Sierra’s more established artisan partners, operating a large workshop with over 20 employees. They produce for some of Peru’s top Alpaca brands, and we feel incredibly honoured to be among their partners. Even though La Sierra is smaller in scale compared to some of their other clients, Hugo and Sebastian have always treated us with the same respect, care and professionalism.
How We Met
René and I met Hugo and Sebastian during our second sourcing trip to Peru. We were struggling to find reliable, high-quality producers until we were connected with a leading fibre production company. From there, we received a recommendation that led us straight to Illary — and to Hugo and Sebastian.
A Memorable First Visit
I remember our first visit vividly. We took a taxi to a small, maze-like street in Arequipa and got lost trying to find their home. Eventually, we arrived at the right door and were greeted by Hugo with a warm smile and a comforting cup of cinnamon tea. At the front of the house, they had set up a modest showroom, displaying some of their exquisite work. I was immediately drawn in, running my hands across the textiles, amazed by the quality and finish of every piece.
Craftsmanship with Purpose
Hugo and Sebastian’s team produces our much-loved Baby Alpaca blanket scarves and woven throws. Their workshop combines skilled hand-finishing with small-scale machinery to ensure each product is consistent, beautiful and long-lasting. Their commitment to quality is second to none, and their partnership has allowed us to create some of the softest and most luxurious pieces in our collection.
