Mother and son Duo. Tradition meets precision in a family-run Cusco workshop.
Just outside the centre of Cusco, in a quiet residential neighbourhood, Johan and Sonia run their workshop from the ground floor of their family home. Bright and open, the space is filled with light, purpose and the gentle rhythm of making. It’s here that many of La Sierra’s pieces take shape, crafted with skill, care and a shared commitment to quality.
Sonia brings decades of experience to her work, along with the knowledge passed down to her by her mother and grandmother. She grew up learning to weave and knit by hand—skills taught slowly, with care and deep respect for the process. Johan now leads the more technical side of the workshop, managing production, operations and communication with calm focus and precision. Together, they form a strong, balanced team.
Their workshop supports local women, including single mothers, through fair pay, flexible hours and hands-on training. Some work from home, others come into the studio—it’s a model that values people and makes space for the realities of life outside of work.
The connection between founder Sophia, Johan and Sonia began at Alpaca Fest in Arequipa, where Sophia met them by chance during a fibre tour for the main fibre provider. A conversation turned into a shared meal, and before long, a working partnership began—built on aligned values, open communication and a shared love for the craft.
Since then, we’ve collaborated on our most recent collection 'Slow'. Johan and Sonia bring reliability, honesty and care to everything they do. They speak about how much they enjoy making La Sierra pieces—admiring their timeless style, simplicity and softness. We feel the same way about working with them.
