A World of Traditions: How Our Artisans Celebrate Father’s Day
At La Sierra, we are more than just a sustainable knitwear brand in Australia. We are passionate about traveling, exploring foreign lands, and delving into diverse cultures, all while forging meaningful connections with people. Through these journeys, we gain a deeper insight into the diversity of the human experience, understanding how others connect and find meaning in the world around us.
This year, in celebration of Father’s Day and the beautiful diversity of global cultures, we wanted to reach out to the Dads of La Sierra. Our goal is to discover the unique ways they honour Father’s Day, offering a glimpse into their traditions and cherished moments. Even though Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June in South America, they were happy to share how they celebrate this special occasion.
Luis
His life beautifully embraces simplicity, and he truly cherishes those ordinary, everyday moments. Living in the north of Ecuador with his wife and three children, Luis mentioned that Mother’s Day is more widely celebrated in their town. Nonetheless, he treasures Father’s Day by spending it with family, enjoying his favourite dishes, and taking strolls around the town with those he loves. Luis recently built a new house, and it fills us with joy to see him savouring time in his new home. One of my fondest memories from visiting was witnessing his wife braid his hair, something she lovingly does almost every day. Luis and I share a love for the same Ecuadorian dish he eats every Fathers Day, and I’m excited to share this local recipe with you soon—so stay tuned for this!
Felix
In Southern Peru, Felix celebrates Father's Day with his wife Paula and their three children in a vibrant community setting. The festivities kick off on Friday in both public and private institutions, where women honour the men with gifts and traditional foods like pork rinds, fried trout, and beef stew, accompanied by plenty of beer. Sunday's celebration is more intimate, with families gathering at home, in their town, country residence, or restaurants to enjoy meals and beer together, similar to the gatherings for Christmas, Mother’s Day, or the Feast of the Candelaria in Puno. For Felix, Father’s Day is a cherished occasion that brings family together in joyous celebration.
Jesus
In the Cusco region of Peru, Jesus and fellow fathers begin Father’s Day by receiving handmade cards and hugs from their children, a heartfelt tradition cherished in local schools. As the day unfolds, they participate in a festival of native dances held at the historical Inca complex, a popular gathering spot for fathers in the area. Here, they enjoy typical lunches of baked or fried guinea pig, pork, and pork rind, accompanied by refreshing drinks like corn beer and the beloved national beverage, Inca Kola.
At La Sierra, we're delighted to share these beautiful cultures and traditions with you as we continue our journey together of exploration of culture and connection. Thank you for reading, your Fathers Day celebrations be filled with joy, love, and meaningful connections.
