Why We Choose Natural Fibres?

At La Sierra, we are committed to working with natural fibres that are kind to the earth, gentle on the skin, and celebrated for their quality and longevity. We choose these fibres for their softness, breathability, durability and minimal environmental impact—qualities that not only feel better on the skin but also align with the values of conscious, quality-driven living. For our customers, natural fibres mean timeless pieces that are gentle on the body (non-toxic),, biodegradable at the end of their life, and beautiful in both form and function.
Natural fibres are also lightweight, renewable and biodegradable, with excellent mechanical properties that make them strong, flexible and comfortable to wear. They are non-toxic, thermoregulating, and known for their high specific stiffness—all while offering superior breathability. Natural fibres are better for both our bodies and the planet. Free from the toxins often found in synthetic materials, they allow your skin to breathe while reducing the environmental impact of garment production and waste.
At the heart of our collections is Alpaca fibre, which we proudly champion as the most luxurious and sustainable of the natural animal fibres. We work primarily with the Adult Huacaya breed, known for its cloud-like texture and naturally crimped fleece. This fibre is carefully and ethically sheared from the back, sides and neck of the animal—where the softest and most consistent quality is found—producing garments that are warm, breathable, and built to last.
Depending on the design and intended function of each piece, we thoughtfully combine Alpaca with other premium fibres:
-
Fine Merino Wool
Fine Merino wool is a premium natural fibre sourced from Merino sheep, renowned for producing some of the softest and most breathable wool in the world. It is much finer than traditional wool, with fibres that are smooth, flexible, and gentle against the skin—making it ideal even for those who typically find wool itchy. Soft, resilient and thermoregulating, Merino enhances warmth while maintaining breathability and a gentle feel on the skin. It adds elasticity and structure to knits, making it perfect for everyday wear. -
Mohair
Sourced from the Angora goat, Mohair is known for its luminous sheen, silky texture and impressive strength. It adds lightness, softness and a subtle halo effect to garments, ideal for airy, luxurious knits. -
Mulberry Silk
Mulberry silk is considered the highest quality silk in the world. It comes from the Bombyx mori silkworm, which is raised in controlled environments and fed an exclusive diet of mulberry leaves (hence the name). Mulberry silk offers exceptional smoothness and a natural lustre, enhancing blended garments with added softness, elegance and breathability. Its lightweight nature makes it particularly well suited to warmer climates and trans-seasonal wear. -
Andean Highland Wool
Sourced from native sheep breeds raised in the Peruvian highlands, this wool is known for its durability and rustic charm. It adds body, resilience and a beautiful natural warmth to our textured knits and heavier-weight garments. -
Peruvian Pima Cotton
Renowned for its long fibres, silky feel and strength, Pima cotton from Peru is among the finest cottons in the world. Its softness, breathability and durability make it ideal for trans-seasonal pieces and layering essentials. -
Recycled Polyamide
In certain garments—such as pants or pieces that benefit from added structure—we incorporate recycled polyamide to improve durability, shape retention and long-term wearability. This fibre is thoughtfully selected to extend the life of our garments while reducing reliance on virgin synthetics.
Together, these thoughtfully chosen fibres allow us to create biodegradable, non-toxic garments that are breathable, gentle on the skin, and designed to move with you. Natural fibres offer temperature regulation, meaning you stay warm in the cold and cool in the heat. They are moisture-wicking, hypoallergenic, and incredibly comfortable to wear throughout the seasons. Beyond comfort, they offer long-lasting durability, timeless beauty, and the satisfaction of wearing something that aligns with your values. With every La Sierra piece, you are investing in quality, care, and a deeper connection to the natural world.
